HISTORY

The Turfgrass Association of Australia (TGAA) was formed in Melbourne, Australia, after a meeting at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on November the 22nd, 1989. A steering committee was elected and the Aims and Objectives of the TGAA presented at an election in April 1990.

The TGAA was formed to give all turf managers and allied trades a single representative body. Up until this time the turf industry had been represented by organisations such as the Australian Golf Course Superintendents Association, the Royal Australian Institute of Parks and Recreation and the various state Bowling Greenkeepers Associations.

This meant that many sports field curators, racecourse managers and those connected with the industry, such as chemical, fertiliser and irrigation personnel had only a small amount of input into how the Australian Sports Turf Industry was organised.

The formation of the TGAA meant that everyone associated with the industry, no matter how small, had a say. The TGAA set up a Victorian division, which was closely followed by the ACT and Southern Tablelands and the Murray region. Over the past two years, Tasmania has formed it's own unique TGAA.

The TGAA has also developed close ties with the Australian Golf Course Superintendents Association, the Royal Australian Institute of Parks and Recreation and the various State Bowling Greenkeepers associations, the Sports Managers and Staff Association of South Australia, The Grounds Managers Association of Western Australia and the International Sportsfield Curators Association in New South Wales, to give Victorian turf managers access to information from around the Nation.
